Open Letter to Our Dunwoody Fitness Membership:

Dear Friends,

It is with the deepest regret and difficulty that I must announce the closing of Dunwoody Fitness.

Dunwoody Fitness was made a reality through the love and support of this community. With your support, we were able to accomplish some remarkable things: re-opening after so many months, the build-out, surmounting so many obstacles… but sometimes, the most intimately remarkable are the small things that go unnoticed by most. The small things, like receiving a phone call from the mom of an overweight student, crying as she told us that Dunwoody Fitness has changed their daughter’s life. Or like receiving emails from members with stories of a new life – life without blood pressure medication, insulin injections, or anti depression medication. Small things like testimonials of weight loss, improved strength and renewed energy from folks who thought they would never see a change.

Dunwoody Fitness made it happen – we changed bodies, we changed lives and we experienced the greatest form of success, very often in these “small” ways.

We experienced other forms of success, too – business success. Dunwoody Fitness opened with only 175 members (in contrast to the 500 that were projected as necessary); now we have 895! We grew as projected, we met our monthly membership goals each month, and we celebrated 14 straight months of continued financial growth.

But, in the end, it all came down to the beginning. It came down to math and economics, down to red ink versus black. As stated, we opened 325 members shy of our opening quota, and just as the country, and the world, were sliding into the worst economic climate in decades. We opened significantly under-capitalized, that is, we started in the hole, but still we opened …determined to carry out the vision that had been brought to us by your community. As the economy continued its tumble, we lost investor financial support, and relations with vendors and creditors that were more liberal in a robust economy became less forgiving.

But we fought the good fight; in the end, however, it was a losing battle – the uphill grade was too steep, the hole too deep, and the financial backing too limited.

So now, despite the long nights, the grueling seven-day workweeks and the seemingly boundless enthusiasm of our team, it is necessary, although with a very heavy heart, that I announce the closing of Dunwoody Fitness, effective Thursday May 27, 2010.

The Gym of Buckhead, located in Sandy Springs, has agreed to honor any and all memberships from Dunwoody Fitness, which will then be transferred as of Tuesday, June 1st.

Sincerely,

Amy Neal
